Handcraft Making

HomeHandcraft Making

Our handcrafting program taps into the rich cultural heritage of the Virunga Region while promoting local craftsmanship as an economic driver. At Gorilla Brothers, we work with local artisans to create beautiful, sustainable handcrafts such as pottery, hiking sticks, gorilla sculptures, and woven goods. These crafts not only serve as a source of income for the artisans but also act as an avenue for cultural exchange with visitors.

Through workshops and community gatherings, we teach these traditional skills to the younger generation, ensuring that cultural knowledge is passed down while also empowering local communities with the ability to generate income through eco-friendly means. Visitors to the region can participate in craft-making sessions, where they learn how to make their own keepsakes while supporting local artisans. Every purchase made contributes to both the preservation of local traditions and the development of sustainable tourism in the region.

Gorilla Brothers supports local artisans by preserving traditional skills and empowering the community through sustainable craft-making. Here are the actions we’re taking:

  • Artisan Training Programs: We offer training workshops where local artisans learn how to craft eco-friendly products such as pottery, woven baskets, hiking sticks, and gorilla figurines. These products are crafted using sustainably sourced materials like bamboo, clay, and recycled items.

  • Handcrafts for Conservation: We connect local artisans with global markets by selling their handmade products in our eco-tourism shops, on our website, and through partner retailers. A portion of the proceeds from each sale goes directly back to the community and conservation efforts.

  • Youth Apprenticeships: We’ve created an apprenticeship program for young people in the region to learn handcrafting skills from seasoned artisans. These apprenticeships provide them with job skills and an alternative income source, helping to deter future involvement in poaching.

  • Cultural Exchange Programs: Through our cultural exchange initiatives, tourists and volunteers visiting the region can participate in handcraft workshops, where they learn from local artisans and gain insights into the cultural heritage of the Virunga Region. This creates a deeper connection between visitors and the local community.

  • Conservation-Themed Handcrafts: Our artisans create gorilla-themed crafts, such as statues, necklaces, and keychains, that raise awareness about the plight of mountain gorillas. These crafts are popular among tourists and help spread the message of conservation far and wide.
